On Thursday, November 21, 2019, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. hosted his annual celebration of Albania’s Independence. The event, which marked the 107th anniversary of the nation’s independence, took place in The Bronx County Building, Veterans Memorial Hall.
“Our borough is home to a beautiful diaspora of different cultures, and the Albanian community has played a key role in the ongoing positive redevelopment of our borough,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “Today’s event provides us with an opportunity to celebrate the heritage of our Albanian brothers and sisters, and I am always proud to take part in this wonderful event.”
This year’s honorees included Prof. Dr. Imam Tahir Kukaj, Muslim Chaplain for the New York City Police Department; and journalist, poet and author Skender Mehmet Buçpapaj. Three individuals were also honored posthumously: Prof. Dr. Rexhep Krasniqi, Ph. D.; Imam Abdullah Hoxha and Shaban Binaku.
The event was co-sponsored by the Albanian-American Society Foundation, the Sons and Daughters of Albania in America and the Albanian Community Center.
