Farewell to Agim Ghilaga (Xhilaga)

June 2, 1931 – December 18, 2018

Agim Ghilaga (Xhilaga), husband to Vildan Bushati over 55 years, and father of Teuta and Artes Ghilaga died peacefully in the company of his immediate family on December 18, 2018. Agim was born in Tropoje, Albania on June 2, 1931 to Haxhi Ghilaga (Xhilaga) and Shukrije Kadiu Xhilaga. On April 7, 1939, the family was forced to go into exile in Athens, Greece, as a result of the invasion of Albania by the Fascist Government of Italy. In 1940, as political refugees, they emigrated from Greece to Istanbul, Turkey, where they resided until 1955. During their stay in Istanbul, Agim received his education in St. Benoit and Turkish schools. In 1955, after the family moved to the United States, Agim embarked on various business ventures. In 1963 he married Vildan Bushati, also of Albanian ancestry and had two girls Teuta and Artes Ghilaga Aydelotte, both of whom reside in New York. As a young man Agim was an ardent participant in sports such as soccer and swimming which he continued to enjoy as a spectator of all sports. He never forgot his Albanian heritage and led a productive social life in his community and with Albanian Americans. He is survived by his family, Vildan, Teuta, Artes and her son Bato with Todd Aydelotte, his brother Skender and his daughter Emilie as well as numerous cousins and related family in Albania, and other parts of the World.
